Bernard J. Sullivan, 74, of Bellevue, passed away suddenly, Wednesday morning, September 28, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center in Dubuque. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, October 1, 2011, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bellevue. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery where full Military Rites will be accorded by the Bellevue American Legion Post #273. Visitation for Bernie will be held from 3:00 7:00 p.m. Friday evening at Hachmann Funeral Home & Cremation Service and again Saturday morning after 9:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Bernie was born on January 6, 1937 in Springbrook, Iowa, the son of Vincent and Rosella (Tebbe) Sullivan. He served the United States Army From 1955-57, stationed in Detroit Michigan. After returning from the service, Bernie married Beverly Jackson on June 2, 1962 in Bellevue. Bernie owned and operated Sullivan Construction for many years, retiring in 2004. He was generous, optimistic and had a great sense of humor. He appreciated the simple things. Bernie was proud of his family and enjoyed every minute with them. He enjoyed watching baseball and was a die-hard Cubs fan. Bernie loved watching his granddaughters play sports, especially softball. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandson, Brody. Bernie will be deeply missed. Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 49 years Beverly; two sons, Lorin (Linda) Sullivan, of Bellevue, and Larry (Becky) Sullivan of Bellevue; seven grandchildren Kayla, Britney, Gabrielle, Nicole, Lexee, Natalie, and Brody; three sisters, Joann (Jack) Messerich, of Preston, Lavonne (Dale) Lemekuhl, of Camanche, and Karen (Bob) Skoff, of Sugar Creek. He is preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Harlan, Dale, Lester; and one son Loras. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the Bellevue Ambulance personnel, and to the Medical Associates staff in Dubuque for all of the care and compassion given to Bernie and his family.
