Carl J. Kilburg

Carl J. Kilburg, 69, of Maquoketa, died Monday, November 9, 2009 at Finley Hospital in Dubuque after fighting cancer for two years. Services will be at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 14 at St. John Catholic Church in Andrew. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery. Friends may call from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday at Kingery~Lemke Funeral Home and again Saturday after 9:00 at the church. Carl was born on September 6, 1940 in Springbrook, son of Melvin and Luella (Hoffmann) Kilburg. He married Maureen Lathrop on May 2, 1964 in Springbrook. He worked for Ralston Purina in Clinton for 28 years, retiring in 2001. He served in the United States Army Reserves. Carl also farmed for many years and truly enjoyed it. He had a great love for animals and was always concerned about them being fed. Carl and Maureen enjoyed traveling; they also spent the last four winters in their home in Bullhead City Arizona. He was an avid Hawkeye and Cubs fan. Carl was a kind spirit, with unwavering strength, and was incredibly generous. He was always concerned for everyones well-being despite his own struggles. He provided inspiration for all who had the good fortune to know him. Surviving is his wife of 45 years, Maureen, of Maquoketa. Carl felt his greatest contribution to this world were his four children of whom he was so very proud: Rhonda (Tim) Countryman, Cedar Rapids; Debbie (Dennis) Ties, St. Louis; Chris Kilburg, rural Maquoketa and Kelly (Brian) Peebles, Fresno, California. He was known as Gramps to his six grandchildren: Jamison and Kendall Countryman, Sydney and Alex Ties, and Gannon and Sullivan Peebles. Also surviving are a sister, Darlis (Bill) Croce, of Maquoketa; a brother, Dennis (Liz) Kilburg, of rural Otter Creek; and a sister-in-law, Alice Kilburg, of Bellevue. He is preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Lorin and Mahlon. Online condolences may be left for the family at www.lemkefuneralhome.net
