Carol A. Scheckel, 71, of Bellevue was called home Sunday morning, May 28th, 2017 at Mercy Medical Center Dubuque. She entered heaven peacefully surrounded by her family after a courageous battle with cancer.A mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 2nd at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Bellevue. Burial will take place in the Parish cemetery. Visitation for Carol will be held from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the Hachmann Funeral Home, Bellevue and Friday morning from 9:00-10:00 a.m. at the funeral home.Carol was born on June 12th, 1945 in Dubuque, the daughter of Lawrence and Ethel (Keil) Wicke.Carol grew up in St. Donatus and graduated from Bellevue Community High School in 1963. She married David L. Scheckel on November 20, 1965 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bellevue. Together they raised three children.Carol worked for the Bellevue Community Schools Lunch Program for over 23 years, retiring in 2009. Carol was an American Legion Auxiliary Member and also belonged to the Bellevue Horseman's Club. She enjoyed tractor and antique car rides with her husband David. Carol was a member of the Iowa Cornfed Girls band for many years. She also enjoyed playing cards and spending time at the casino.Carol's grandchildren were always a priority. She was so proud of all of them. Carol loved the holidays and always looked forward to them. Having her family together made her heart happy. Those left to honor her memory include her husband of 51 years, David L. Scheckel, of Bellevue; son, John (Sherri) Scheckel, two daughters, Trisha (Troy) Patzner and Tonya (Nick) Heim, all of Bellevue; seven grandchildren, Colby (Ashley), Jayden (Molly), Tanner, Macy, Reiter, Halle and Rory; and great granddaughter, Madison and sister, Alice (Butch) Thompson. She was preceded in death by her parents.The family would like to thank all who have been there for Carol throughout her journey, especially Dr. Eric Engelman. Carol was the true definition of a fighter.
