Donald Scheckel, 74, of Bellevue, Iowa, passed away Friday evening, February 6, 2015 at his home surrounded by family. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, February 10 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bellevue. Friends may call from 3:00 to 7:00 pm, Monday at the Hachmann Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Bellevue and again Tuesday morning from 9:00 to 10:30 am also at the funeral home. Donald was born the son of Odelo and Ila (Herrig) Scheckel on September 8, 1940 in Bellevue, Iowa. He married Lou Ann Scholtes on November 4, 1967 in Bellevue. Through the years Donnie worked for Kueter and Sons Construction, Welsch Oil and farmed with his brother David, and most recently with his son Brad. Donnie was a founding member of the Bellevue Horsemans Club and was an active director and member for many years. Donnie most enjoyed playing cards, working with his horses, and enjoyed participating in the Miles and Deppe Threshing Days. One of Donnies most recognized accomplishments was the creation and development of the Jackson County Pro Rodeo and Jackson County Horse and Harness. He was very active in the Bellevue community through the years with the Bellevue Chamber of Commerce and the Bellevue Heritage days. Donnie was a talented carpenter, mechanic and heavy equipment operator. Donnie most enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and will be dearly missed by friends and family. Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 47 years, Lou Ann, of Bellevue; children, Shelly (Doug) Smithson, of Preston, Tammy (Jon) Trowbridge, of Clover, South Carolina, Brad (Ashley) Scheckel, of Bellevue and Lisa (Ron) Schroeder, of Bellevue; eight grandchildren, Brena and Brook Smithson, Jeff and Luke Trowbridge, Makaila and Charlee Scheckel and Gavin and Coy Schroeder; three brothers, Wayne (Julie), David (Carol) Scheckel and Tom (Pat) Scheckel; six sisters, Marilyn (Pete) Clasen, Pat (Jerry) Meis, Judy Scheckel, Bonnie (Butch) Coakley, Ruth (Richard) Hopson and Jane (Ron) Nemmers. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandchild, Colen Smithson; and a brother and sister in infancy. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established in Donalds name.
