Eugene Michael Scholtes, 84, of Bellevue, died Monday, October 2, 2017, at Mill Valley Care Center, Bellevue. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am, Friday, October 6 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bellevue. Burial will be held in the Parish Cemetery. Visitation for Eugene will be from 4:00 - 7:00pm Thursday evening at the Hachmann Funeral Home & Cremation Service, in Bellevue and again Friday morning prior to Mass at the funeral home. A Rosary service will be take place at 3:30, Thursday prior to the visitation. Eugene was born on September 2, 1933 in Springbrook, Iowa, son of Floyd and Leora (Sturm) Scholtes. Eugene served the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He later served the United States Army National Guard and Naval Reserve. He belongs to the American Legion and Bellevue Horsemans Club.Eugene retired from John Deere, in Dubuque after 33 years. He was an extremely generous man. He volunteered for many organizations. He was a driver for the United Clinical Lab, Dubuque Meals on Wheels, Dubuque Area of the Blind and also transported veterans to appointments at the Iowa City Veterans Hospital.Eugene enjoyed playing cards, golfing and watching the Cubs, Hawkeyes and Chicago Bears. He loved music and was a proud member of the Dubuque Barbershop quartet for over 30 years and also belonged to the East Dubuque Drum & Bugle Corps for over 52 years. Those left to honor his memory include his siblings, Lorin (Betty) Scholtes, Roger (Shirley) Scholtes, LaVonne Kueter and Louann Scheckel, all of Bellevue; brother in-law, Gerald Schroeder; sister in-law, Becky Scholtes; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Leonard Shep Scholtes; sister, Janet Schroeder; and three brothers in-law, Glenn Bud Daniels, Ronald Kueter and Donald Scheckel.
