Gladys R. Stokesberry, 100, formerly of Maquoketa, passed away Tuesday, December 19, 2017, at Mill Valley Care Center in Bellevue. A Christian Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, December 22, at Hachmann Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Bellevue. Burial will be in the Sacred Heart Parish Cemetery, in Maquoketa. Visitation for Gladys will be held from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Friday morning prior to the service at the funeral home.Gladys was born on October 30, 1917, in Farmer, South Dakota, daughter of Matthias and Catherine (Wieseler) Haiar. She married Edward Stokesberry on September 20, 1938. Gladys worked for over 22 years for Monsignor Raymond Duggan at rectories and churches throughout Iowa. A favorite memory of Gladys' was her 1952 two-month European adventure to attend the 35th International Eucharistic Congress. She visited locations in Spain, Italy, Portugal, and France. The highlight of that trip was meeting Pope Pius XII and visiting Fatima and Lourdes. Gladys also worked as a nurses aide at Mercy Hospital in Dubuque.Gladys was a sweet lady who always had a smile on her face. She resided at Sunrise Villa for the past several years, where she developed many friendships. Her spirit is carried on by her sister, Martha Robinson, many nieces and nephews whom she loved greatly and other friends and family too numerous to list, but not forgotten. She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers: Simon, Isidore, Richard, Frank, Theodore and Jericho, as well as her sister Rose Taplin. Sister, aunt, great-aunt, friend and neighbor, we love you and your smile. Your spirit and laughter will be held forever in our hearts. Here is to 100 wonderful years filled with even more wonderful memories of Gladys.
