Joseph Paul “Pitter” Potter II, 83, of Bellevue, IA, and formerly of Maquoketa, peacefully departed this life on Earth for his eternal home in Heaven on Tuesday, April 23, 2024.
The family has honored his wishes and called upon Hachmann-Mier Funeral Home of Bellevue, Iowa to deliver his deeded remains to the University of Iowa Dept. of Anatomy and Cell Biology. Graveside service will be held at a later date.
Joseph Paul Potter II was born on June 27th, 1940 in Maquoketa, IA; the only son and one of four children to Joseph Paul “Pete” Potter, Sr. and Grace I. (Magonegil) Potter. He attended Maquoketa schools and was a member of the class of 1959. Paul had a love for farming and worked for several different farmers over the years, in addition to other jobs including: The Jackson County Hospital, Sewer Equipment Company of America, Red Jacket Pump, O'Brian's, Ross River Farms, Nagle's in Monticello, The Northern Railroad, and John Deere. After retiring from John Deere in the late 80's, he worked for Dave and Marla Morehead and the Three Hills Rodeo Co.
Paul had a love of quarter horses. He enjoyed raising, riding, and showing them in speed events. He also loved helping out with all sorts of farm and field work, especially mowing hay. He loved deer hunting, fishing, mushroom hunting, spending time with his children, and enjoyed having a beer or a “Hot -Totie” with his friends. He loved his grandchildren dearly. "Work hard, play hard" and "Rock-n-roll!" were a couple of his favorite sayings that he will be remembered by.
Paul is survived by a daughter, Angel R. Schiffer (Jay Merfeld), Maquoketa, IA, and two sons, Matthew Potter of Monmouth, IA, and his namesake, Joseph Paul Potter, III, Maquoketa, IA. He is also survived by five grandchildren: Levi Frost, Cedar Falls, IA; Wyatt Schiffer, CA; Kyle Schiffer, Cedar Falls, IA; Kayla Potter, Cedar Rapids, IA; and Dakota Potter, FL; 5 great-grandchildren, two step-granddaughters:Amanda Schmidt and April Griffin, a step-grandson-in-law: Kenny Schmidt, four step-great-grandchildren, a sister, Candie (Earl) Emery of Houston, Texas; a brother-in-law, Matt Shafer of Denver, CO; a niece, Dawn Burke (Patrick Grimm), LeClaire, IA, a niece, Mary (Leo, Jr.)Grimm, Maquoketa, IA; and a nephew, Charlie (Linda) Wagener of Dubuque, IA; in addition to several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Paul was preceded into eternity by his parents; two sisters, Patricia Shafer and Jane Wagener; an infant nephew, Peter Joseph Potter; a brother-in-law, Owen Wagener, December 30, 2016; son-in-law, James E. Schiffer, February 11, 2016; a stepson, Micheal K. Griffin, November 16, 2021; and a granddaughter, Leslie R. (Rubel) Frost, February 26, 2023.
Much gratitude and appreciation goes to the CNA's, nurses, housekeeping staff and administration who all cared for Dad over the last seven years at Mill Valley Nursing Home, Bellevue, IA. There are a few extra special ones, and Dad loved you - you know who you are! So much gratitude and appreciation for Hospice of Jackson County and their staff for all the comfort and care you extended to our Dad and family.
