Lawrence L. Griebel Jr. 79, of Bellevue, passed away on Thursday, January 30, 2014 at Mercy Medical Center, in Dubuque. Funeral services for Lawrence will be held Monday, February 3, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bellevue with Rev. Father Phillip Kruse officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call on Sunday from 1 to 5pm at the Hachmann Funeral Home, and again on Monday morning from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Lawrence was born on January 11, 1935 in Bellevue, Iowa the son of Lawrence & Verrena (Gerke) Griebel. He married Mary Lou Ernst on July 7, 1962 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bellevue. Lawrence graduated from Bellevue High School in 1952. He worked for the telephone company until serving the United States Army in 1956. After the service he returned home to farm with his father on the home place and continued to farm that land with his wife, Mary Lou for 51 years. Lawrence was quiet, gentle and extremely proud of his grandchildren. He loved to play poker, spend time with family and work on the farm. He had a passion for Poland China Hogs. Lawrence attended and showed purebred hogs at the Iowa State Fair and the National Barrow Show in Austin, Minnesota for many years. He was very involved in his community. He served as a School Board Member, member of the Jackson County Pork Producers, and served as the Tete De Morris Township Clerk. He was also a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bellevue. Lawrence will be deeply missed by all. Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 51 years, Mary Lou, of Bellevue; son Bruce (Donna) Griebel, of Cedar Rapids; daughter, Angela (fiancé, Craig Burken) Weber, of St. Donatus; and four grandchildren, Reese Frohling, Haley , Macy, & Logan Griebel; and sister, Mary Kay (Norman) Busch, of Knoxville Tennessee. He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter, Kate; son in-law Paul Dickie Weber; and his best friend and beloved cousin Glenn Griebel. The family wishes to thank the Bellevue Ambulance and Bellevue Fire & Rescue for their quick response and genuine care and compassion shown to Lawrence.
