Phyllis M. Berthel, 84, of Bellevue, passed away peacefully, Friday evening, May 12, 2017, at Mill Valley Care Center, in Bellevue. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Bellevue. Burial will take place in the parish cemetery. Visitation for Phyllis will be held from 3:00-7:00 p.m. Monday evening at the Hachmann Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Bellevue and again Tuesday morning from 9:00 until 10:00 a.m. also at the Funeral Home. Phyllis was born on January 18, 1933 in Charlotte, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Leola (Herrig) Hoffmann. She married John Berthel on June 24, 1952 in Charlotte, Iowa. He passed away on November 24, 1993.Phyllis worked as a secretary at Marquette Catholic Schools and later for the Archdioceses of Dubuque. Phyllis was a spirited, fun loving, selfless women, who was blessed by many people who called her mom.Phyllis had a great amount of pride for her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She loved to bake and cook for everyone. Phyllis had a great sense of humor, and was devoted to her Catholic faith. Those left to honor her memory include her seven children, Richard (Sue Hart) Berthel, of Chicago, Mary Kay (Terry) Mueller, Paula (Bill) Lampe, both of Bellevue, Brian (Christina) Berthel, of Anamosa, Angela (Shawn) Jackson, of Bellevue, Keith (Angie) Berthel, of Davenport and Susan (Dan) Jacobs, of Bellevue; fifteen grandchildren, Carrie (Erik) Brown, Katie (Jeff) Laban, Zac, Weston, Haley and Paige Lampe, Dalton (Hope Schmerbach) and Callie Jackson, Kyle, Kassy and Sydney Jacobs, Ryan, Sarah, Peyton and Gabby Berthel; six great grandchildren, Lillian, Alivia and Annabella Brown, Eli, Kailey, and Ben Laban; five sisters Verna Berthel Powell, LaVonne Tillis, Shirley (Ken) Green, Connie (Julius) Kuberski and Janis (Jerry) Burken; a brother, Joseph (Doris) Hoffmann, Jr.; sister in-law Marilyn Hoffmann; a brother in-law Ray McClimon, and sixty-three nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, grandson, Colin Jackson; sister, Lois McClimon; and brother, Gerald Hoffmann.The family would like to thank the staff at Mill Valley Care Center and the Staff of Hospice of Jackson County for the care and compassion shown to Phyllis.
