Very Rev. Florian J. Schmidt, 80, of Dubuque, Iowa, passed away Saturday morning, March 14, 2015 at Enoble Skilled Nursing and Rehabilitation center in Dubuque. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00am, Tuesday, March 17 at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Springbrook, Iowa. Archbishop Michael Owen Jackels will officiate. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery. A visitation will be from 9:00 11:00am, Tuesday morning prior to the Mass at church. Arrangements are being handled by Hachmann Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Bellevue. Florian Schmidt was born January 11, 1935 in Springbrook, the son of Florian and Clara (Steines) Schmidt. He graduated from St. Josephs High School in Bellevue, Loras College and Mount. St. Bernard Seminary in Dubuque. He was ordained March 18, 1961 at St. Raphael Cathedral in Dubuque. His first assignment was temporary assistant at St. Marys Parish in Dubuque, followed by assignments at All Saints Parish in Cedar Rapids, St. Boniface Parish in Garner, St, Michaels in Belle Plaine, St. Francis in Belmond, St. Patricks Parish in Waukon, Sacred Heart in Dubuque, Resurrection in Dubuque and St. Edwards in Waterloo. In 1979, he was assigned his first parish as pastor at St. Patricks in Buffalo Center. He was also pastor at Sacred Heart in Woden, St. Lukes in St. Lucas, St. Marys in Dubuque and retired at St. Pauls in Worthington in 2002. Rev. Schmidt resided in Dubuque since his retirement. Those left to honor his memory include, his caregiver for 30 years, Arlene Boyer, of Dub uque; a brother in-law, Oscar Donar; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Floyd, Paul and Rev. Willie Schmidt and four sisters, Evelyn Brant, Marie Donar, Gilda Martelle and Myrna Punphrey.
