Sister Ann M. Harrington, BVM (St. Remi), age 85, peacefully departed from this world on December 18, 2024, at Mount Carmel Bluffs in Dubuque, Iowa.
A celebration of Sister Ann's life will commence with visitation and the Rite of Committal for natural burial on Friday, December20, 2024, in the serene setting of the Mary Frances Clarke Chapel at Mount Carmel Bluffs. The day will begin with quiet reflection at 9 a.m., followed by the Rite of Committal at 9:30 a.m. Sister Ann will be laid to rest at Mount Carmel Cemetery. In loving tribute, there will also be a Sharing of Memories and a Memorial Mass on Friday, December 27, 2024, in the same chapel, where friends and family will gather at 9:30 a.m. to share cherished memories, followed by a heartfelt Memorial Mass.
Sister Ann devoted her life to education and service, impacting many hearts as a French and history professor at Mundelein College and later as the director of the Liberal Studies master’s program. Her journey continued at Loyola University in Chicago, where she shaped young minds as a history professor and director of the Asian Studies program. Her influence extended beyond the classroom, as she also shared knowledge as a secondary teacher in Wichita, Kansas, and St. Louis. A gifted author, Sister Ann penned several books, including two that celebrate the rich history of the BVM congregation.
Born on July 15, 1939, in Milwaukee to Earl and Tonnita (Freiman) Harrington, Sister Ann answered a calling that would shape her life forever. She joined the BVM congregation on August 2, 1957, from Christ the King Parish in Milwaukee. Her commitment deepened as she professed her first vows on February 3, 1960, followed by her final vows on July 16, 1965.
Sister Ann was preceded in death by her beloved parents and her cherished siblings: sisters Helen Harrington, Mary (Eddie) Resch, and Kathleen “Katie” Harrington; and brothers Thomas (Nancy), Timothy, and Joseph Harrington. She is lovingly remembered by her brother, Michael Harrington of Dousman, Wisconsin; sister-in-law, Marian “PeeWee” Harrington of Pewaukee, Wisconsin; along with many devoted nieces, nephews, and the Sisters of Charity, BVM, with whom she shared a profound bond for 67 years.
