Sister Mary Jeanne Stopper, BVM, (John Edward), 93, of Mount Carmel Bluffs, 1160 Carmel Drive, Dubuque, Iowa, died Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025.
Visitation will be from 9-9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025, in the Mary Frances Clarke Chapel at Mount Carmel Bluffs. Sharing of Memories will be at 9:30 a.m. followed immediately by the Mass of Christian Burial. Burial is in the Mount Carmel Cemetery.
Sister Mary Jeanne was an elementary teacher in Chicago; Phoenix; and Burbank and North Hollywood, Calif., where she also served as principal. She ministered as a high school English teacher, office staff, and parish and school volunteer in Glendale, Calif.
She was born on May 5, 1931, in Los Angeles, to George & Pearl (Bertin) Stopper. She entered the BVM congregation Sept. 8, 1949, from Holy Family Parish, Glendale, Calif. She professed first vows on March 19, 1952, and final vows on July 16, 1957.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers John “Jack” (Tomalu) Stopper, Brother Edward “Ed” Stopper, FSC, and William “Bill” Stopper; and sisters Sister Suzanne Stopper, BVM, and Elizabeth “Betsy” (Chuck) Gower. She is survived by a sister-in-law Letty Stopper, nieces, nephews, and the Sisters of Charity, BVM, with whom she shared life for 75 years.
