Verdis C. Hoffman, 82, of Bellevue, passed away Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at the University of Iowa Hospital & Clinics in Iowa City. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday morning, October 28, 2013, at Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Springbrook. Burial will be in the Parish Cemetery. Visitation for Verdis will be held from 2:00 6:00 p.m. Sunday, at the Hachmann Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Bellevue and again on Monday morning from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. at the Church in Springbrook. Verdis was born on January 16, 1931 in Springbrook, son of Aloysius and Magdalena (Weis) Hoffman. He married Delores Stillmunkes on June 16, 1953 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Bellevue. Verdis farmed in the Springbrook area nearly his entire life, retiring just five years ago. He was a member of the Bellevue Knights of Columbus, past president of the Jackson County Pork Producers. He was the co-founder of the annual Springbrook Pork Roast, and was an active member in his church. Verdis was a quiet, gentle, and laid-back guy who had a heart of gold. He was a man of few words with a dry sense of humor and never complained about anything. In his spare time Verdis enjoyed playing Euchre, Bingo, woodworking and watching game shows on TV. He also was a sports nut, his teams of choice were the Green Bay Packers, Iowa Hawkeyes, and Saint Louis Cardinals. He will be deeply missed by his family & friends. Those left to honor his memory include his wife of 60 years, Delores; six children, Karen (Jeff) Wells, of Maquoketa, Kathy (Steve) Tebbe, of Bellevue, Kevin (Nina) Hoffman, of Charlotte, Keith (Rachel) Hoffman, of Maquoketa, Karla (Lynn) Kilburg, of Springbrook and Kurtis Hoffman, of Dubuque; 15 grandchildren; one step grandchild; five great grandchildren; 3 step great grandchildren; two sisters, Ivis Kilburg, of Bellevue, Mary Lee Kilburg, of Maquoketa: and a brother, Larry (Lois) Hoffman, of Preston. He was preceded in death by his parents; and granddaughter Kaitlin Rose Wells.
