Virgil R. Nemmers, 79, of Bellevue, passed away suddenly Saturday, January 19th, 2008, as a result of a boating accident in Branson, Missouri. Virgil was born August 21, 1928 in St. Donatus, Iowa to the late Joe and Irene (Davis) Nemmers. He married Algean Berthel, July 18th, 1953 at St. Johns Catholic Church, Andrew. She survives. Virgil graduated from Loras Academy. He retired from Moorman Mfg Co., Quincy, IL. He currently was a bus driver for the Bellevue Community Schools. Virgil also has been a funeral directors assistant for the Kingery~Lemke Funeral Home for several years. He was a member of the Bellevue Knights of Columbus, the American Legion Post 273 and had been a volunteer for many events including 33 years as an EMT with the Bellevue Ambulance Service. He also was a member of the Jackson County Veteran Affairs. He served with the United States Army from 1951-1953, receiving a Purple Heart during the Korean War. His greatest joy was being at the cabin with his family and friends. Besides his loving wife of 54 years, Algean, his survivors include his children, Larry (Deb), Duane, Mary Beth (Rick) Michels all of Bellevue and Joe (Judy) of Asbury; his brothers, Alvin (Bev) of Sherrill, Loras (Lois); sister-in-law, Leota Nemmers, brother-in-law, Dale Wilming all of Dubuque; ten grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Besides his parents he was preceded in death by one son Darrell, two brothers, Robert, and Joseph and one sister Shirley Wilming. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated at 10:30 AM on Friday, January 25th, 2008 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bellevue. The Rev. Scott Bullock will preside. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday from 3-7 PM and again on Friday from 9:30 AM until the time of Mass ALL at the CHURCH. There will be a prayer service at 2:30 PM on Thursday at the Church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Bellevue Ambulance.
